Springtails (Folsomia candida) are microfauna that breakdown dead plants/leaves, organic waste and mold. Your new Springtail culture arrives in a lump charcoal & sphagnum moss substrate ready to seed your new culture or terrarium/vivarium's substrate. We ship in charcoal with a bit of sphagnum moss to keep Springtails from being crushed in transit and make it easier and cleaner when seeding new cultures or adding to different habitats. To use your culture, simply add charcoal/moss directly into your substrate and keep hydrated. Temperate/Tropical Springtail culture will thrive in most terrarium/vivarium environments.
A Nutritional Dry Yeast portion also provided can be used as supplemental food for your culture & when making additional cultures. A necessary food source for Microfauna such as Springtails. Containing everything needed for a colony to live & thrive, the portion provided will keep a culture fed for weeks with a pinch of yeast flakes every few days. This is helpful if your terrarium does not have living inhabitants to supplement low waste conditions as the colony grows while preparing habitat or to boost new colony growth rate.
Each 4oz culture is packed full Springtails. Taking a guess, you are getting 40-80 per 4oz very likely more as eggs and juveniles are very hard to see but they're in there. One 4oz culture is suggested for every 1-2 gallons of substrate in the terrarium/vivarium at a minimum. The more culture you start with the quicker it will establish. Add some flake food from the portion provided with your order if you want to supplement feeding or boost the growth rate of your new culture.
